Primjena inovacijskog motora na primjeru nastave matematike, Financije i pravo, Vol. 9 No. 1

Creative thinking techniques in security operation centers

Abstract: This paper examines the implementation of creative thinking techniques in security operation centers (SOC) aimed at increasing the effectiveness of an organization’s defense. Many of the most destructive cyberattacks are meticulously planned, with significant time and expertise invested in their preparation, often resulting in catastrophic consequences for organizations. When facing state-sponsored attackers with continuous funding and ever-growing capabilities, it becomes only a matter of time before they discover effective ways to achieve their malicious goals. Attackers’ high level of innovation is one of their greatest advantages, which makes it essential for defenders to adopt equally innovative approaches. The creative thinking techniques explored in this paper leverage the collective expertise of SOC professionals in a structured and directed manner, encouraging joint exercises in which each expert contributes individual insights. This approach enables a free exchange of ideas, experience, and knowledge, ensuring that defense effectiveness is not limited to the intuition or momentary judgment of a single analyst but instead relies on the shared experience of the entire team. Through teamwork and collective wisdom, organizations can devise diverse breach scenarios, including those “we-haven’t-thought-of-that” cases that are often overlooked in the design of monitoring and defense solutions, yet commonly exploited by attackers. As cyber investigations repeatedly demonstrate attackers’ creativity and use of abstract but highly effective techniques, SOC defenses must be even more creative to stay one step ahead and to successfully conduct threat hunting and other security operations.

Intelligence analysis techniques and critical thinking in countering information disorders

Abstract: In countering information disorders – which include disinformation, misinformation and malinformation – and fake news, intelligence analysis tools are evidently useful and efficient. Nevertheless, it is of utmost importance to bear in mind the variety of intelligence analysis tools spectrum, and to use those tools in order to achieve geo and time transference along with the appropriate risk management (threat, vulnerability, probability, impact). The aim of the research is to provide solutions to problems of information overload and bounded rationality in collecting and analyzing information, primarily those found on the the internet. For this purpose, article will discuss examples of Structured Analytic Techniques, namely deception detection (MOM, Motive, Opportunity, and Means; POP, Past Opposition Practices; MOSES, Manipulability of Sources; EVE, Evaluation of Evidence), and critical thinking tools (PaulElder framework) in countering challenges of cognitive limitations, primarily those refering to perception, biases and memory.
